Abstract

Chondrosarcomas (CHSs) comprise about 20% of all primary tumors of the skeleton. Approximately 3% to 6% of all CHSs arise in the head and neck area. When occurring in the head and neck, CHSs arise most frequently in the maxilla; less common sites of involvement are the mandibular body, ramus, skull base, nasal septum, and paranasal sinuses. The mean and median patient ages range from 35 to 45 years. A 70-year-old woman was referred to our hospital for treatment of nasal cavity mass. The patient presented with headache and nasal obstruction for 1 month. Radiographically, a radiolucent mass with poorly defined borders was noted at the nasal septum and left nasal cavity. Resected tumor consisted of several fragments of whitish-gray translucent tissue, measuring 2.0 cm of the largest one. Microscopically, the tumor was low grade conventional CHS. The tumor revealed irregular shaped lobules of cartilage. These lobules were separated by fibrous band and permeated bony trabeculae. The tumor was moderately cellular and contained hyperchromatic plump nuclei. Occasionally binucleated cells were present. Mitotic activity was not noted.
